How to legally own an airgun in T&T

After receiving a number of emails requesting information on how to legally own an airgun in Trinidad and Tobago, I wrote this post.

There are three easy steps to owning an airgun in Trinidad & Tobago:

1. Go to any police station with national ID (PP, DP or electoral ID) and apply for Certificate of Character. Time: 3 weeks. Cost: $50 and your finger prints.

(While this is in process, head down to the Firearms Unit on the 4th Floor, Police Admin on Sackville St, PoS. Get an Air Rifle application form).

2. When you get the CoC back, take it, along with the completed AR app form to Firearms Unit.
Time: 3 weeks. Cost: Free.

3. When you get the permission letter from the Commissioner, contact me. I'll direct you to the appropriate dealer(s), based on your needs, budget and location.
Buy your rifle, pellets and auxilliary equipment and supplies (scope, bag, cleaning kit, etc.)

Remember you are buying a shooting platform, not just a gun. So, take into account the cost of additional equipment, spare parts and maintenance. A good airgunsmith is invaluable, and T&T has a very short list of them. Maintain good OpSec by not bragging about your new acquisition to friends, relatives, neighbours. Go shooting with like-minded, more experienced airgunners, so you can learn.

Keep your gun secured in your home. The single best way to prevent children from playing with guns is to teach them to shoot safely in a relaxed safe environment. Pay a professional, if you’re unsure. Shooting is fun.

Remember, safety first.

  1. Man, and these are the "easy" steps. I guess our gun laws in America ain't so bad after all. I got my first airgun, a Red Ryder BB gun, for Christmas when I was 6 years old. Still got too and it still shoots great. Well, as great as it ever did. Thanks for the info my friend.

  3. Ok I was told if I wanted to bring in one of the air rifles it needed to have a smooth barrel and not rifled so i was wondering is this true because the prices the dealers i called quoted for one was just ridiculous so it seems importing one was just cheaper!!

  9. Due to the lack of any information as is the norm in Trinidad, I have decided to post my question here as a last resort. I am utterly shocked by the price difference of air rifles between the US and local dealers. I have seen US$99.00 rifles being sold here for upwards of 3 grand.

Is it possible to order and ship my rifle from online, and what is the procedure for doing so? What are the duties involved?

Its so funny to hear officials blather on about globalization, and widening our economy when the simplest items cost horrendously unjustified and arbitrarily concocted import duties.

    1. okay to the consumer the prices are unfair....but to the supplier they can be considered justifiable....in trinidad we are only allowed smooth bore rifles which i am sorry to say are generally ancient and out of production......so suppliers have to custom order smooth bore rifles and there is a minimum order amount.... so investing in 100 rifles will cost alot ,and honestly how often do people buy air rifles, so suppliers must make back some part of their investment just to stay in business.....as i have said before if we got our government to remove the ban on spiral bore rifles it would make thinks ALOT easier for both the supplier and the consumer......i think we should come together and push the removal of this ban
      it can only benefit us

  17. Is it true that Trinidad stopped giving .177 pistols license since 1995? And why? I'm an Air Rifle owner and would love to own an air pistol. Can someone help me in getting this?

  18. hi is a fully metal kwc mini uzi airsoft co2 BB gun legal in Trinidad and what age is required to own this gun

  19. You can purchase online...it is very difficult to find an air rifle that will be within the legal restrictions of our laws. U need to acquire an import license which is easy (same as above) But finding an airrifle that is smooth bore and .177 is the problem. if the barrel is rifled, they will seize it.

  21. Gasparillo Police stole my air rifle and arrested me I spent a night in the cell at the station and taken to court and remanded in custody on the fabricated charge of common assault, I also spent a night in arouca Golden Grove Prison, I was granted bail and went to court for 4 years and my matter was dismissed, I took a copy of the court extract to Gasparillo Station and they took a report that I was requesting that my rifle (which I have a receipt and a permit for) be returned, it's been almost a year now and now they are telling me that the Commissioner has ordered that my rifle be destroyed, Can you help me?
